In the show, the guy that runs the ad modeling agencies in the original film now owns a string of 500,000 parking garages nationwide, and the main character, Anne Welles, who becomes a model in the original, becomes a world-famous valet, sort of like the Ronald McDonald for parking garages, only a beautiful lady, not a clown,’’ Landry says in his usual rapid-fire delivery.
The movie, about three young women clawing their way to the top in show business and paying a terrible price, struck Landry much like Grey Gardens,’’ he says. First time you see it, it’s ‘Oh, how sad,’ and then about the third time I saw it, I said ‘Oh, how wonderful.’ ’’
There’s also the story of the actors in the movie: What happened to Sharon Tate was sad, a tragedy [she was murdered in 1969 by Charles Manson followers], it’s horrible. But on the DVD [commentary] you hear people say Sharon Tate was actually a pretty good actress. Well, no, she wasn’t, she was terrible, and we play that in our show.’’Company helps aspiring models and fashion models present their portfolios to modeling agencies and scouts from around the world.
As usual with the Orphans, it’s a drag-intensive production, starring Afrodite as Anne Welles, Penny Champayne as Jennifer North, Liza Lott as Neely O’ Hara, and introducing Ryan Landry as Miss Helen Lawson. And there’s music and dancing, this time to karaoke tracks, at one point featuring tap-dancing syringes and pill bottles.Also as usual with the Orphans, the humor is gonzo times three. It’s like ‘Make Way for Ducklings’ and I’m the big fat one in front. So we put out this thing for season passes, and I thought we’d sell like, four or five, and we’ve already sold over 100. That tells me we’ve got a real fan base.’’
He says the audience for the troupe, founded in 1995, is not even 50 percent gay anymore, more like 30 percent gay and 70 percent straight, which is really funny because they all have to go to the basement of a gay leather bar to see us.’’ Technically, the Orphans and famous actresses put on their shows in the basement club Machine, which is in the same building as that leather bar.The straight people who are not used to our stuff are scared at first, then I think they get a kick out of how edgy it is, and the straight people who are cool don’t even think about it, they just come to see us,’’ he says.
Moreover, audiences have become conditioned to the Orphans’ outrageousness, he says, much the way that fans become acclimated to the off-kilter world of the Smurfs or Kukla, Fran and Ollie.Things we do with the space are more surprising than the subject matter,’’ he says. That’s where the surprises come now, they don’t come in giant [genitalia] jokes, that’s all just part of our bizarro Smurf world. Landry’s future includes making a movie and writing other types of projects, he hopes. But for the immediate moment, more shows like Valet of the Dolls’’ are uppermost in his mind.
